About Former President Nelson Mandela

MANDELA DAY on 18 July: A day for individuals to make an imprint

Former President Nelson Mandela will celebrate his 91st birthday on 18 July 2009 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, as well as its sister organisations, has launched a campaign calling upon the peoples of the world to honour this day (18 July) as an annual international Mandela Day of humanitarian action in order to celebrate his life and legacy. Mr Mandela has given 67 years of his life making the world a better place. As such, on Mandela Day the aim is for individuals to give at least 67 minutes of their time in service to their communities in whichever way they choose. The Mandela Day, which will not be a holiday, should be characterised by people taking charge of their own destinies and, at the same time, honouring Mr Mandela by doing good for others. In his State of the Nation Address to the National Assembly on 03 June 2009 President Zuma announced that the South African Government would give its full support to the initiative. He further said, “It (Mandela Day) will give people in South Africa and all over the world the opportunity to do something good to help others... Let us wholeheartedly support Mandela Day and encourage the world to join us in this wonderful campaign." Guided by the noble cause that is espoused by Mandela Day, members of the South African Embassy in Argentina commit to honour this day and further call upon interested individuals in Argentina to honour Mr Mandela by doing something good for others on this day.
